Ice Fishing
Ice Fishing on Lake Simcoe
Ice Fishing is more than a sport here in Ontario, it is an industry. You can rent huts with all amenities and full service. You are taxied to the heated hut, fishing gear ready. A stove to cook what you fish and beds to relax.
The huts are ready to be placed on the lake. Here at Thorah Centennial Park you will have to share the space with the Kiteboarders. Summer and winter, they race on the lake.
I'm not into fancy Icefishing. It's all about peace and quiet, watch the birds fly by. Listen to the roar of ATVs and the whining sound of snowmobiles. Chat with the officer that checks the fishing credentials. And for all the people out there that ask "Isn't it too cold out there?". No, there is clothing that keeps the wind out and the warmth in. I enjoyed fishing at -15 with wind chill of well below -20 for 3 hours. The fishing line freezes instantly and the hole needs to be de-iced every few minutes, but it's totally worth it. Just one thing to remember, the phones are not made for these temperatures, they just turn off.
One thing I can say for sure, no fish was harmed by my attempts. I hope this will change now in 2020.
