Run up to Whistler's Mountain
Training run up Whistler's Mountain outside Jasper AB
10 more training days until the 5Peaks race in Whistler. It looks as if Whistler's Mountain outside Jasper is not climbed very often. I'm number 771 that did the hike and took the gondola down.
The hiking trail starts about 1km before the gondola parking, just by the Hostel. The hiking trail is 6.8 km with just over 1km elevation to the top.
The Jasper Tramway shows these numbers: The Lower Station is at 1304 metres (4279 ft) above sea level and the Upper Station is at 2277 metres (7472 ft)
Almost there, about 100 meter elevation to the top. The trail up is mostly though forest and shrubs, so not many places to enjoy the scenery. About half way, the trail crosses under the gondola. I didn't count the switch backs on the way up, but there are many.
The view is nice, but it could be warmer. I was not exactly dressed for sightseeing on this windy, drizzly day. I made it up in just a few minutes over two hours. Not running, but I thought I had a good speed ... until I reached about 2000 meters. That's when I felt the thin air. I had to stop more often to gasp for air.
$15 saved me from having to "run" down the mountain again. It was a good training day and the first time I could try my new Trail Running Shoes. Just bought them for the 5Peaks race and they fit like a glove. I made it up here, so what can go wrong in Whistler !!
