    IBM Express Software
IBM offers more software under the Express license model. Please review the latest information at IBM Express Software
IBMs licensing is called Passport Advantage for Volume Purchases and Passport Advantage Express with no commitments to the number of licenses. We use the Passport Advantage Express here and it is ideally suited for small business starting with as little as one license. Licenses are per registered user and include Upgrade Protection and Technical Support. As a registered Lotus Notes user, you can run the software on any computer, office, portable and home.
The cost is based on a 1st year subscription and renewals thereafter. Competitive upgrades will cut the 1st year cost by up to 50%. Products in Passport Advantage are without version or release numbers. Upgrade Protection makes releases irrelevant, you always have access to the most current version. The software delivery is by electronic download. You can purchase media when needed. You have access to the most current and the previous releases, for all platforms and all languages.

Minimum purchase is usually 5 licenses. This is the product license without the right to upgrade. You are however entitled for fixes and patches that can be downloaded from the Microsoft website. All examples here are for Open License purchase.

    Novell
    Did You Know?
The Domino Server runs on two different LINUX systems:
    SUSE Linux Enterprise Server
    Red Hat Enterprise Linux
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server from Novell is one of the supported Linux servers. You can purchase the software with subscription for either one or three years.
    Example (February 2012 price list)
     Software Download and Support
Per Server, one full year subscription

    $349 (us$)
The SUSE Linux Enterprise Server comes with similar features like the Microsoft Windows Server. You get all your networking tools, Printer sharing, file sharing, user log-in and security. The server works with all desktop software, Windows XP and 7, Mac OS and Linux. We recommend to renew the support every year which entitles you to upgrades.

    Opening a new branch office
IBM Lotus Domino is licensed on a per user, no matter how many servers you run. You will have your base cost for new hardware and operating system, but no additional license fees.
Microsoft Small Business Server is licensed on a per user and server. The inital cost for the 5 user version is $1,270 plus the same base cost for new hardware.

Growing from 5 to 250 users
How much does it cost to run Domino versus the Small Business Server over 9 years. The dollar amounts are the accumulated licensing cost over 9 years without considering inflation or price changes by vendor. The calculation includes an office suite for every employee, either Microsoft Office or Symphony/OpenOffice.
We use the example from the main page, the basic Windows Small Business Server for 5 users with Office Home and Business ($2,905). Then we renewed them every three years which is in line with the Micorsoft Software Assurance. Three renewals over 9 years is 3 x $2,905 = $8,715. This is the basis to compare 4 different Domino licensing models, all configured with the Windows Server 2008 (no Linux).
    5 users 10 users 50 users 100 users 250 users
    $8,715.00 $14,820.00 $63,660.00 $124,710.00 $307,860.00
Mail-Only Domino license with the full 1st year license cost (no trade up) and Symphony/OpenOffice as the document, spreadsheet and presentation suite.
    5 users 10 users 50 users 100 users 250 users
    $4,520.00 $6,655.00 $23,735.00 $45,085.00 $109,135.00
Collaboration Domino license with the full 1st year license cost (no trade up) and Symphony/OpenOffice as the document, spreadsheet and presentation suite.

    $5,570.00 $8,755.00 $34,235.00 $66,085.00 $161,635.00
Mail-Only Domino license with the full 1st year license cost (no trade up) and Office Home and Business as the document, spreadsheet and presentation suite. We use a 5 year renewal cycle because it is not tied to SharePoint.

    $7,790.00 $13,195.00 $56,435.00 $110,485.00 $272,635.00

Domino vs Microsoft Small Business Server
Only when we configured a full Domino Collaboration and bought every user the Microsoft Office Home and Business license, we finally were able to match the cost for the Microsoft Small Business Server starter version.
The Small Business Server software on it's own is not the big ticket item, it's the 'requirement' to have Microsoft Office installed as well. We did not include the costly upgrades for full collaboration and off-line SharePoint. You get all these enhanced features from IBM Lotus Domino for the same cost that gets you barely started with Microsoft Small Business Server.

    Update March 23, 2011
IBM announces the availability of advanced directory capabilities and Lotus Domino partitioning for Domino Collaboration and Messaging Express
Advanced Directory Capabilities means that the you can link additional directories to your address lookup on the server. A very helpful feature when you have customer address books from a CRM system.
